How to Compare RRSP Providers: A Criteria Checklist
General information only. Not financial, tax or investment advice. This site is independent and is not the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Check canada.ca and your CRA My Account for your own figures. Last checked against CRA pages: October 17, 2026. Examples use made-up numbers. No advertising or affiliate links appear on this page.
Short answer: This page is a neutral checklist. We don't name, rank or link to any provider, and we don't suggest investments.
Questions to ask any provider
- Fees: account fees, trading fees, fund management fees, transfer-out fees, currency conversion costs. Get the fee schedule in writing. Note that CRA says administration fees and brokerage fees inside a trusteed RRSP aren't deductible.
- Types of RRSP: individual, spousal, group; whether the provider supports what you need.
- What you can hold: which investment types are available (without us suggesting any).
- Regulation and protection: ask which regulator oversees the provider and what investor-protection coverage applies and its limits. We have not verified specifics.
- Contribution process: how you contribute before the deadline, and any provider cut-off earlier than CRA's date.
- Tax slips and receipts: RRSP contribution receipts, and how you can see the contribution dates (CRA may need months for excess cases).
- Transfers: how in-kind transfers work and timing.
- Support: hours, language, how to complain.
- Your own risk and time horizon: decide with a qualified professional.
Red flags
- Promises of returns or "guaranteed" outcomes.
- Pressure to contribute right at the deadline.
- No clear fee disclosure.
Why no provider links?
Referral arrangements in Canada can raise regulatory questions that we haven't verified, so this site's RRSP pages contain purely educational content, with no affiliate or referral links.
FAQ
Can I hold an RRSP at more than one place? Your personal limit applies across all RRSPs; CRA counts contributions to all.
Does a lower fee mean better? Not necessarily; compare overall suitability.
What we could not verify
- Regulatory rules about referrals and recommendations (e.g., CIRO).
- Any provider's specific fees or protections.
